TikTok Ban Moves Closer in the US

House Bill Advances, US Steps Closer to TikTok Ban

By [Author's Name] | April 20, 2024

The United States has taken a significant step towards banning TikTok within its borders. On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a bill that would require TikTok to sever ties with its parent company, ByteDance, or face serious consequences.

The bill, which was introduced by Congressman Mike McCaul (R-TX), garnered widespread support from both Democrats and Republicans. It passed the committee by a vote of 34 to 18 and will now move to the full House of Representatives for consideration.

The Biden administration has been increasingly vocal in its concerns about TikTok's ties to the Chinese government. In March 2024, the administration issued an executive order that bans TikTok from being installed on government devices, and more than half of US states have followed suit.

TikTok has defended its practices, stating that it does not share user data with the Chinese government. However, the company's close ties to Beijing have raised concerns about potential national security risks.

If the bill passes the House of Representatives, it will then move to the Senate for consideration. If it passes both chambers of Congress, it will be sent to President Biden for his signature.
